Dr. Wolfgang Born (1893-1949), Halbbruder des Physikers und Nobelpreisträgers Max Born, war als Künstler, Kunsthistoriker und Kunstkritiker in München und Wien tätig, bevor er 1937 als Kunstdozent nach Amerika emigrierte. Der Briefwechsel mit Thomas Mann dreht sich um eine bislang unbekannte frühe Serie von Aquarellen (1916) als Vorläufer der Lithographienmappe Der Tod in Venedig (1921), zu der Thomas Mann einen Brief beisteuerte, und setzt sich im jeweiligen Exil fort. Höhepunkt ist Borns Zuruf 1936, Deutschland sei dort, wo Thomas Mann sei. Thomas Manns berühmte Sentenz „Where I am, there is Germany“ („Wo ich bin, ist Deutschland“), die seine Ankunft in Amerika 1938 akzentuiert, ist somit ein aus deutsch-jüdischer Kulturtradition kommender Aufruf zum Widerstand gegen das NS-Regime in Deutschland.

Nach einem Studium der Kunst (an der Münchner Akademie) und Kunstgeschichte (bei Heinrich Wölfflin) porträtierte Born in den Zwanziger Jahren zahlreiche Größen seiner Zeit, neben Heinrich und Thomas Mann u.a. Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, Alfred Kerr und Richard Strauß. In Wien promovierte Born bei Josef Stryzgowski und versuchte 1933, Oskar Kokoschka als Illustrator für Thomas Manns Joseph-Roman Die Geschichten Jaakobs zu gewinnen. Zahllose Artikel in Kunstzeitschriften und Wiener Tageszeitungen werden erstmals ebenso bibliographisch erfasst wie die vielen in Amerika entstandenen Artikel zur Kunst. Seiner dortigen prekären Lebenssituation trotzte Born zwei Standardwerke ab, Still-life Painting in America. (1947) und American Landscape Painting (1948). Den Auftrag Oskar Kokoschkas vom Februar 1949, Born solle das maßgebliche Buch über seine Graphik schreiben, vereitelte Borns plötzlicher Tod im Juni 1949. Der Nachlass Wolfgang Borns befindet sich seit 2014 in der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek München.

Wolfgang Born (1893-1949), half-brother of the physicist and Nobel Prize winner Max Born, was active as an artist, art historian and art critic in Munich and Vienna before emigrating to America in 1937 as an art lecturer. The correspondence with Thomas Mann revolves around a previously unknown early series of watercolors (1916) as a precursor to the lithograph portfolio Der Tod in Venice (1921), to which Thomas Mann contributed a letter, and continues in the respective exile. The high point is Born’s exclamation in 1936 that Germany is where Thomas Mann was. Thomas Mann’s famous phrase „Where I am, there is Germany“, which accentuates his arrival in America in 1938, is thus a call from the German-Jewish cultural tradition to resist the Nazi regime in Germany.

After studying art (at the Munich Academy) and art history (with Heinrich Wölfflin), Born painted portraits in the 1920s of numerous celebrities of his time, in addition to Heinrich and Thomas Mann, among others Albert Einstein Einstein, Sigmund Freud, Alfred Kerr and Richard Strauss. In Vienna Born earned his doctorate with Josef Stryzgowski, and in 1933 he tried to get Oskar Kokoschka to illustrate for Thomas Mann’s Joseph novel Die Geschichten Jaakobs. Numerous articles in art magazines and Viennese daily newspapers secured his livelihood. They are recorded here for the first time in bibliographical form, as are the many articles on art written in America. In spite of his precarious living situation Born wrote two standard works, Still-Life Painting in America (1947) and American Landscape Painting (1948). The commission Oskar Kokoschka in February 1949, Born was to write the book about his graphic, Born’s sudden death in June 1949 thwarted. Born’s estate has been housed in the Bavarian State Library in Munich since 2014.
